Types of Heaters
There are 2 primary types of Heaters installed in the Houston area.
Gas Heaters (Natural Gas or Propane)
If you only heat your pool or spa on special occasions and don’t need to maintain a constant warm water temperature at all times, a gas heater is the way to go. This is the most common type of heater installed as heats water quickly and is universally compatible with all pool systems. The majority of gas heaters are 400K BTU, allowing you to enjoy a hot spa in 30 minutes, and warm your pool in a matter of hours versus days.
Most common heater models:
- Hayward Universal HC Series 400k BTU
- Hayward Universal H-Series 250k / 400k BTU
- Pentair MasterTemp® 250k / 400k BTU
- Jandy JXi™ / JXiQ™ 260k / 400k BTU
Heat Pumps (Electric)
Heat pumps are ideal if you desire a constant warm water temperature for daily swimming. They take time to heat, but are great at maintaining water temperatures when the outside air is warm (above 60 degrees), making them more cost efficient to heat a pool compared to a gas heater. A gas heater would be needed in conjunction with a heat pump if you desire heat in the colder weather. Heat pumps help to cost effectively extend the swimming season, but are not a direct substitute for gas heaters, nor are they ideal for heating spas. Heat pumps can also be purchased with chiller capabilities to lower your water temperature in the summer months.
Most common heat pump models:
- Hayward HeatPro® Heat+Chill
- Pentair Ultratemp® Heat/Cool
- AquaCal HeatWave SuperQuiet® Heat/Cool
- Jandy VERSATEMP™ Heat and Chill
